Who We Are

We work with organizations to promote gender equality

Gender at Work is an international collaborative of women and men who work to build organizational capacities to promote gender equality. Through our processes, we also build knowledge and knowledge products about effective development practices that engender real organizational, individual and community change.

Formally established as an NGO in 2003, we have been developing our approach and methodologies since the early 1990s. Although much has been accomplished towards gender equality in the past decades, in no region of the world do women yet have equal legal, social, or economic rights. Gender at Work takes action to change this situation.

We see organizations as sites of transformation

We believe that many development organizations are reflections of the cultures in which they were created, replicating biases that exclude, or discriminate against, women and other marginalized groups. These biases often inform how organizations themselves work and, as a result, affect their outcomes. These embedded attitudes, which lead to disempowering practices, are not conscious thoughts and actions; therefore, cannot be changed by implementing policies and allocating resources alone. Deeper change can only occur through challenging the mindsets and behaviours. In transforming unequal power relations in organizations, individuals and communities are also transformed. When organizations function equitably, justly and accountably, they become a model for real change.
